Delhi–Mumbai SpiceJet flight suffers tyre burst on landing

Digital Desk: One tyre on a SpiceJet flight from Delhi to Mumbai was found deflated today, just after the flight landed safely on the runway. During the landing, the issue went completely unreported, with passengers disembarking safely. Since then, as instructed by ATC, the aircraft has been parked at the assigned bay.

"The captain felt nothing unusual during landing. There were no odours or smoke noticed. Passengers normally vacated, "SpiceJet said in a statement.

Spicejet flight SG-8701 took off from New Delhi at 7.30 am and landed at Mumbai airport at around 9 am.

A day earlier, the aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), received petitions to deregister two more B737 aircraft leased to the carrier, marking the third time in recent weeks that the authority has received deregistration requests for SpiceJet aircraft.

The airline recently announced its plans to gradually replace all of its older Boeing aircraft with the new Max type and add about 20 new Max aircraft to its fleet until the end of the current calendar year.

Earlier this month, the DGCA suspended the license of the pilot-in-command of a SpiceJet flight for six months after he ignored the co-pilot's suggestion onboard a Boeing B737 aircraft. The development follows the May 1 event in which an aircraft from Mumbai to Durgapur encountered strong turbulence during landing. Three staff members and approximately 14 passengers were hurt as a result of the violent turbulence.

The DGCA restricted nearly 90 of the airline's pilots from operating Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in April of this year as they were not adequately educated. "Those pilots were trained on a malfunctioning simulator, and the aviation authority ordered the airline to retrain the pilots, in addition to a Rs 10 lakh punishment," DGCA officials said.
