Digital Desk: Salman Rushdie, who was stabbed numerous times at a New York event on Friday, would most likely lose one eye, according to his book agency, Andrew Wylie. Wylie claimed that Rushdie was placed on a ventilator after hours of operation, and the nerves in his arms were severed. He added that Rushdie's liver had been stabbed and damaged.

Meanwhile, the person who attacked Rushdie has been identified as Hadi Matar (24), of New Jersey. Authorities arrested him immediately after he attacked the author.

Salman Rushdie was attacked as he prepared to give a speech at the Chautauqua Institute in western New York on Friday. Rushdie, 75, was stabbed while being introduced on stage.

After being transported by helicopter to a hospital, the author underwent surgery to treat his injuries.

Salman Rushdie rose to popularity with his Booker Prize-winning 1981 novel "Midnight's Children," but his name became known around the world after "The Satanic Verses." Since 1988, the book has been prohibited in Iran because it is thought to be blasphemous by many Muslims.

Later, the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of Iran issued a fatwa, or decree, demanding the execution of Rushdie.

Rushdie, who was born in India, has spent the last 20 years living in the US. After the uproar surrounding his fourth novel, The Satanic Verses, he largely lived in the UK and disappeared from public view. He continued to write novels throughout the 1990s, despite the threats.

The attack on Salman Rushdie was condemned by literary figures across the world.
