Digital Desk: Rains and landslides have disrupted life in numerous parts of Assam in recent days, causing the Cachar district administration to close all educational institutions and non-essential business establishments for 48 hours starting from Thursday. According to a notification from district officials, the order will come into effect from 6 am today.
Notably, massive floods have ravaged the northeastern state due to excessive rain over the last few days, which has caused water levels to rise constantly.
According to a report released on Wednesday by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, 1.19 lakh persons in the Cachar district have been affected by the flood.
Reportedly, the administration has set up 135 relief camps and 113 distribution centres in light of the situation, where 48,304 flood-affected people, including 6,911 children and 50 pregnant women/lactating mothers, are taking shelter.
Moreover, massive landslides and waterlogging have also wreaked havoc on the state’s infrastructure, including bridges and roadways. The flood has washed away a stretch of the Kampur-Kathiatali connecting road in the Nagaon district.
In other sections of Assam, communication links have also snapped, completely disconnecting those trapped in flood-affected and low-lying districts.
Meanwhile, the Assam Forest Department has built over forty highlands to provide shelter to animals affected by the ongoing floods in the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) and other national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in the state.
Minister for Environment and Forests Parimal Suklabaidya said on Wednesday that his department is fully prepared to rescue animals from the ongoing floods in Kaziranga and other national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.
