Digital Desk: A strong earthquake rocked northeastern Japan on Tuesday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. 

The 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Aomori Province in northeastern Japan, according to the agency.

The agency states that the quake was felt in parts of the provinces of Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate at around 6:18 p.m. (09:18 GMT).

"The temblor originated at a depth of approximately 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) off the eastern coast of Aomori," it added.

According to the US Geological Survey, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Japan's Hokkaido region.

As per the last reports it came in, there had been no evidence of any damage.
