Digital Desk: Congress Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi expressed concern about what he called a trend of Assamese youths joining the United Liberation Front of Asom ( ULFA-I), primarily due to unemployment, and advised the government to take immediate action to address this issue. During the Zero Hour, the Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi from Kaliabor expressing concern claims that more youths are abandoning their families to join the militant outfit, which undermines years of efforts to restore normalcy to the region. “We have ended up losing decades of development in Assam and the Northeast due to extremists. With great effort, an environment of peace and stability has been established. And this is a troubling trend,” Gogoi said. Further, he stated that as Assam is a border state, immediate action should be taken. “After interacting with the state government in Assam, a team of intelligence and home agency officers should go there and find a solution,” Gogoi said. Tarun Gogoi, Gaurav Gogoi’s father, was the state’s former chief minister for 15 years. During his tenure, the peace process with the ULFA-I began, and Anup Chetia, a top leader of the militant group, was handed over to India by Bangladesh two decades after he left. “These young men are inspired to join the ULFA-I because they believe they can make quick money there, as there are no jobs available in the state. They are oblivious to the fact that their futures are at risk. The government talks about Act East policy, but this issue must act on facts,” the Gaurav said.
