Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said, “The University has moved from a knowledge disseminating centre to imparting useful education in the context of rise of a professional and intellectual society at a time when knowledge becomes globally more available and widely shared and circulated.”


Digital Desk: The Governor’s Award for Excellence to Meritorious Students for the year 2021 were presented by the Governor of Assam and Chancellor of Cotton University Prof. Jagdish Mukhi at the KBR Hall of the Varsity today in the presence of the guest of honour Dr. Garikapaty Narahari Sastry, Director of CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology, Jorhat and Prof Bhabesh Chandra Goswami, Vice Chancellor of Cotton University. The award was instituted and sanctioned in 2021 by the Governor to appreciate and encourage toppers of the undergraduate and post graduate courses at Cotton University. 

 

Gyanashree Saikia from the Department of Geography and Karabee Devi from the Department of Mathematics, the postgraduate and undergraduate toppers of 2021 respectively, are the recipients of the aforesaid award. The award carries a medallion, certificate and a cheque of Rs 5000 each.

“In it’s almost 5 years as a public university, the institution has grown rapidly with significant force in new disciplinary learning and curriculum. The ability of the University’s dynamic leadership to mould itself to digital technologies and the mandate of the National Education Policy, 2020 signifies its adaptive culture that holds out promise for the future,” he added. 

 

Guest of honour Dr. Garikapaty Narahari Sastry in his address emphasised that Cotton College has sown the seeds of education, excellence and culture into Northeast. “I am extremely happy to see that the institution has not only survived and sustained, but has tried to continue to be a place of excellence for the last several decades,” he added. 

 

Vice Chancellor of Cotton University Prof Goswami made a brief presentation on the activities of the institution during this tenure till date. 

 

Meanwhile, in line with India’s celebration of 75 years of independence through the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, two publications - a book entitled Anirbapita Anal edited by Dr Akunthita Borthakur of the Department of History that documents the women freedom fighters from Assam and a transliteration of a few chapters of Mahatma Gandhi’s Hind Swaraj by Dr Merry Baruah of the Department of English - were also released by the Governor. 

 

The redesigned and upgraded official website of the Varsity was also launched at the event by Dr Sastry. 

 

Two faculty members, Dr Ankur Kanti Guha of the Department of Chemistry and Dr Akalesh K. Verma of the Department of Zoology, were also awarded on the occasion for having the best research publications in the science category during the year 2019 and 2020. Additionally, the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Exemplary Service to the non-teaching staff was presented to Diparo Deka for the year 2019 and Pawan Yadav for the year 2020. 

 

The Durgeswar Sarma Memorial Award, an annual award instituted in 2017 for the students securing the highest marks in the undergraduate final examination, was presented to the four student toppers in 2019, 2021 and 2022. Also, Dr Pabindranath Datta Memorial Awards were presented to six undergraduate and postgraduate toppers in Geology for the year 2019, 2020 and 2021 respectively. 

 

The welcome address of the award ceremony was delivered by Registrar Prof Diganta Kumar Das. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks offered by Academic Registrar of Cotton University, Dr Sanjay Kumar Dutta.
