With the merger, the NPP's strength in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly is expected to rise to 28, up from the PDF's two MLAs.

Digital Desk: The National People's Party (NPP) and the People's Democratic Front (PDF) will formally merge on May 6 in Shillong. Chief Minister of Meghalaya and NPP leader Conrad Sangma made this announcement.

On Tuesday night, Sangma announced that the merger would occur on May 6, before the by-election for Sohiong on May 10. She made this announcement while addressing a rally to encourage support for NPP candidate Samlin Malngiang.

With the merger, the NPP's strength in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly is expected to rise to 28, up from the PDF's two MLAs. The Sohiong Assembly constituency will hold a by-election on May 10 because it did not vote on February 27 along with the rest of the state.

Notably, the regional parties United Democratic Party (UDP) and PDF vowed their support for the NPP-led administration following the conclusion of the assembly elections in Meghalaya. In the elections, UDP received 11 seats, while PDF received two. 45 of the assembly's 60 seats are held by the NPP alliance.
