So far, the invasion has resulted in thousands of deaths and the exodus of over 2 million people from Ukraine, where several cities are under siege.

Digital Desk: In the latest development of Russian aggression in Ukraine, Russian warplanes bombed an institute situated in Kharkiv that is a hub of an experimental nuclear reactor; also, a nearby hostel is on fire due to the attack, a senior Ukrainian official said. In an online post, Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the minister of internal affairs, said, “The Institute of Physics and Technology contained sources of radiation used for scientific purposes.” According to news agency Interfax Ukraine, the fire service extinguished a blaze in a five-story hostel covered in 100 square metres. Earlier, the official website of the Ukrainian parliament stated that the firing near the institute was still going on. Last week, after an attack in which an adjacent training facility was set on fire, Russian forces captured the nuclear power station in Zaporizhzhia. On Thursday, hundreds of thousands of civilians remained trapped in Ukrainian cities, sheltering from Russian air raids and shelling, as talks between Ukraine’s and Russia’s foreign ministers made little visible progress. With Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine entering its third week, officials in Mariupol said that Russian warplanes bombed the southern port city on Wednesday, destroying a maternity hospital. So far, the invasion has resulted in thousands of deaths and the exodus of over 2 million people from Ukraine, where several cities are under siege. Moreover, it has also impacted the global economy, which is still recovering from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. According to International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, the war and the massive sanctions imposed on Russia as punishment have caused a contraction in global trade and sharp increases in food and energy prices, forcing the IMF to lower its global growth forecast next month.
