Digital Desk: Ukraine has imposed martial law just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared war. Harder restrictions, such as bans on meetings, movements, and political parties, would be imposed under martial law.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation in Ukraine on Thursday, warning that any attempt by other countries to interfere would result in "consequences you have never seen." He claimed that the attack was necessary to protect people in eastern Ukraine, a justification that the US had warned he would make to justify an invasion.
Putin accused the US and its allies of neglecting Russia's demand to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO and providing Moscow with security guarantees in a televised address. He stated that Russia does not want to occupy Ukraine but rather will "demilitarise" the country and bring those responsible to trial.
Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, has "declared war on Ukraine," according to Ukraine's envoy to the United Nations. After that Ukraine imposes Martial Law.
He also demanded that his Russian counterpart state that Russia would not shell or bomb Ukrainian cities.
If Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia cannot provide a constructive response, Ukrainian Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya suggested on Wednesday night that Russia should relinquish the Security Council presidency, which Russia currently holds.
