Digital desk: Bollywood superstar Rajesh Khanna passed away on July 18, 2012. At the age of 69, the actor lost his life due to cancer. Fans and celebrities attended his burial, as a sea of people gathered outside his Mumbai house for the final goodbye.
While his daughters Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna were seen at the funeral with their mother Dimple Kapadia and Akshay Kumar and Anju Mahendru was also caught on camera. Mahesh Bhatt stated Anju was by Rajesh's side as he took his 'last breath'.
The actress who was Rajesh’s first love was engaged in a committed relationship. Many in the industry, including fans, were sure that they would get married. However, leaving the film industry in shock Rajesh went on to marry Dimple Kapadia.
Rajesh reconnected with Anju in his last few years and their relationship grew to the point where she went with him to the hospital and was by his side when he passed away, according to Mahesh Bhatt.
"When I read about Khanna's passing in the news, I immediately thought of Anju because I knew how his passing would affect her. When I finally got through to her late at night, I discovered that Khanna and Anju had dated during the final years of Anju's life. She used to take care of his medical requirements and even go to the hospital with him. "She choked back her tears and said to me, My only consolation is that I was holding his hand when he took his last breath”, in 2012, Mahesh told Times of India.
“It’s heartbreaking to see that she had to take a strange route to reconnect with her first love," he added. In the same report, Rajesh’s friend Bharathi Pradhan said that Anju and Rajesh had reconnected ‘much before’ his illness. “When he bought a new office, Anju used to work with him. He also told me how happy he was when Anju told him that she had bought a car. That is the kind of relationship they shared," she said.
Kaka, a beloved moniker for Rajesh Khanna had the long-standing record of 17 consecutive hits. Aradhana, Doli, Bandhan, Ittefaq, Do Raaste, Khamoshi, Safar, The Train, Kati Patang, Sachaa Jhutha, Aan Milo Sajna, Mehboob Ki Mehendi, Choti Bahu, Anand, Andaz, Maryada, and Haathi Mere Saathi were some of his best-known songs. No Bollywood star has managed to break his record till date.
