Hashmi's brilliant career has earned him three Filmfare Award nominations and positioned him as one of Hindi cinema's most popular and highest-paid actors.

Hashmi was born and raised in Mumbai. After graduating from the University of Mumbai, he worked as an assistant director on the horror film Raaz (2002) before pursuing a career in acting. 

The next year, he made his acting debut as the lead in the criminal thriller Footpath (2003), which was a moderate box-office hit. By 2004, Hashmi had established himself as a significant actor in Hindi cinema, having appeared in hit films such as Zeher (2005), Aashiq Banaya Aapne (2005), Aksar (2006), and Gangster (2006).

However, he followed this with a string of underperforming films, except the love drama Awarapan (2007), which received critical acclaim.

Personal Life

Hashmi graduated from Sydenham College in Mumbai, India. He is connected to Pooja Bhatt, an actress turned filmmaker; Naseem Ismail, who lives in Pakistan (Lyari) and goes by the moniker RamsEz Baluch; and his uncles Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt. They are both producers, and the former also writes and directs.

Controversies

In July 2009, Hashmi alleged that a housing society in Mumbai's affluent Pali Hill neighbourhood denied him permission to purchase an apartment because he was Muslim. The housing society denied the charges and accused Hashmi and his family of intimidating behaviour. 

Hashmi's charges were denounced by prominent Muslim actors in Bollywood, including Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan, while the Indian-Islamic Cultural Centre accused Hashmi of inciting communal hostilities in India. 

On August 10, 2009, Hashmi retracted his accusation, claiming that the housing society had not discriminated against him and that the incident was a "miscommunication."
