Digital Desk: A Lucknow MP/MLA court has sentenced actor and politician Raj Babbar to two years in prison. In a case dating back to 1996, the Congress leader was sentenced to jail. Babbar, a Samajwadi Party politician at the time, was accused of attacking a government officer, following which a case was registered against him.
The actor was given a fine of Rs. 8500 in addition to the jail sentence. Reportedly, Babbar was present in court on Thursday when he was given a two-year jail term for interfering with government duties and assaulting an officer. The incident took place in May 1996, when the actor-turned-politician was contesting for election from Lucknow on behalf of the Mulayam Singh Yadav-led party.
Raj Babbar is now expected to appeal the verdict in front of the high court.
Shrikrishna Singh Rana, a polling officer, filed a complaint on May 2, 1996, alleging that Raj Babbar and a few other party members had entered the polling booth and physically assaulted the election officer. The accusation stated that Babbar not only mistreated the on-duty officer but also obstructively interfered with government works. Later, charges were filed against the actor and others under IPC sections 143, 332, 353, 504, and 188.
Babbar made his debut in the film industry in 1977 and transitioned into politics in 1989. He first supported the VP Singh-led Janta Dal before switching sides to the Samajwadi Party. He quit the party in 2004 to serve in Congress.
