Islamabad court to announce verdict on Imran Khan's plea against conviction today

Digital Desk: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday reserved a decision regarding Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan's request for the suspension of the verdict made by Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Humayun Dilawar in the Toshakhana case. The verdict will be made public on Tuesday at 11 a.m. (local time) by the Islamabad High Court.

The appeal was considered by a two-member bench consisting of Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri. Amjad Parvez, a lawyer for the Election Commission of Pakistan, submitted his evidence during the hearing after being unable to attend the last session on Friday due to illness.

On his assistant counsel's request, the court had postponed the hearing till Monday last week. The court had ordered the ECP lawyer to present arguments on Monday.

Due to the lawyer's unavailability, it had also urged the electoral body to make other arrangements. According to a report from Geo News, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawyer Latif Khosa concluded his arguments at the previous session.

Imran Khan was given a three-year prison term earlier this month along with a $100,000 fine by a trial court. He appealed the decision and requested his release and the conviction's suspension from the Islamabad High Court. Meanwhile, Imran Khan was the target of a confidential complaint from the Pakistani Election Commission.

Under the rules governing Toshakhana, government officials can keep gifts if they have a low worth while they pay a reduced fee to the government for extravagant items, reports stated.

Since suspicions that Imran Khan purchased the gifts he received as Pakistan's Prime Minister at discount prices and resold them in the markets for profit first surfaced, Toshakhana has been the subject of intense scrutiny.

Imran Khan, the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been charged with abusing his position as prime minister of Pakistan from 2018 to 2022 to buy and sell gifts that were given to the government on foreign trips and cost more than 140 million Pakistani rupees (PKR).

Among the gifts were watches from a royal family. According to government reports, Imran Khan's associates sold them in Dubai. Seven wristwatches were also given, including the "Master Graff limited edition" and six Rolex watches in the amount of PKR 85 million.

Raja Pervez Ashraf, the speaker of Pakistan's National Assembly at the time, forwarded a reference to the Election Commission and requested it to look into the situation. Imran Khan was found guilty of corrupt behaviour by the ECP in October of last year, and a complaint was filed in Islamabad Court.
