Digital Desk: At least seven people were killed and ten were injured when a shooter opened fire at a synagogue in Jerusalem's Neve Yaakov area on Friday, police said. They added that the incident happened in East Jerusalem's northern region. The injured were rushed to Hadassah Mount Scopus Hospital.

"The terrorist arrived by car at a building used as a synagogue in the neighbourhood in the northern portion of East Jerusalem and opened fire police said. Police found the shooter and shot him. The police stated that a handgun that was allegedly used in the incident had been seized. The Magen David Adom (MDA) rescue services said its medics declared five victims dead at the scene. A woman in her 70s was listed in critical condition, a 20-year-old man in serious condition, and a 14-year-old boy in moderate-serious condition, MDA staff said.

Defense Minister Yoav Galant will soon hold a special situation assessment meeting with the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the director of Israel's internal security agency Shin Bet, and other security officials, his office said. The incident came a day after Israeli troops killed ten Palestinians during a raid in the West Bank town of Jenin, nine of them in the army operation, in what was the bloodiest day in the Palestinian Authority (PA)-controlled region in many years.

The IDF said that during a "counterterrorism operation to capture an Islamic Jihad terror group," its forces came under fire and that this led to the deaths of numerous enemy combatants. It claimed that the operation was aimed at members of the Islamic Jihad, who were reportedly orchestrating attacks on Israeli soldiers and civilians.

Meanwhile, Galant stated that the targeted suspects were intending "to undertake a terror assault in Israel". Islamic Jihad has pledged to take retribution "very soon" with its spokesperson Tariq Salmi claiming that "the resistance is everywhere and ready and willing for the next conflict". Saleh al-Arouri, deputy head of the Palestinian party Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, pledged that Israel "would pay the price for the Jenin slaughter."

In response, the Palestinian Authority suspended continuing coordination with Israeli security forces. An army official reported that two rockets fired from Gaza into Israeli territory shortly after midnight were intercepted by Israel's air defence system. The army reported that Israel carried out airstrikes against the weapons installations of Islamic Jihad and Hamas.
