Digital Desk: The Romanian government announced that it would provide food and lodging to Indian students who have been evacuated from Ukraine.
“The Romanian government extended support for a couple of days with food and lodging to Indian students, not just students, but also Indian people travelling from Ukraine,” Romania’s envoy to Delhi Daniela-Mariana Sezonov Tane said.
“There are consular teams from India who have most likely reached the country’s northern border with Ukraine, and they will assist the students in getting to Bucharest, where flights to India will be prepared by the Indian government.” Daniela added.
Expressing worries over refugee influx, Daniela said, “There is a crisis cell in Romania preparing for refugees, but we don’t know how many there will be.”.
Reportedly, the first group of Indian students arrived in Romania from Ukraine on Friday, crossing the Suceava border. A team of India’s Ministry of External Affairs in Suceava will now assist them in getting to Bucharest for their return trip to the country.
India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar talked with several eastern European foreign ministers on Thursday, including his Romanian counterpart, to discuss the escalating crisis in Ukraine and the evacuation of Indian nationals.
When asked if Romania is concerned about Russia’s impending invasion of Poland, Daniela replied, “Not only my government, but also the governments of India and the European Union, appear to be concerned. Frontline countries and neighbouring countries including as Romania, Poland, and Hungary are concerned about a large influx of refugees. That is something for which we must be prepared. It’s really difficult to forecast, and it’s impossible to tell what will happen for the time being.”
“What we hope is that diplomacy will win out in the 12th hour, and Putin will cease his attacks. As you may be aware, the EU stands united, and we have a very strong joint position of the 27 EU member countries against Russian aggression, asking for a cease-fire and imposing extremely tough sanctions against Russia if the situation persists,” Daniela added.
