Digital Desk: Former US President Donald Trump slammed Russia's attack on Ukraine on Sunday, calling it "appalling" and reaffirming his position that it "would never have occurred" if he had been president.
Donald Trump expressed his support for Ukrainians while simultaneously criticizing US Vice President Joe Biden. "Russia's attack on Ukraine is heinous. We are praying for Ukraine's proud people. "God bless them all," Trump remarked at the CPAC conservative meeting in Florida, according to Reuters.
Trump said that if the 2021 US election had not been "rigged," the "horrific calamity" would not have occurred. "As everyone knows, this awful event would not have occurred if our election had not been rigged and if I had been elected," Trump stated.
Trump lauded President Vladimir Putin's "genius" action last week in recognizing the independence of two Ukrainian areas – Donetsk and Luhansk – and deploying Russian soldiers to Ukraine in a podcast. "Putin declared a big portion of … Ukraine … as independent. Oh, that's wonderful. … I said, 'How smart is that?' And he's going to go in and be a peacekeeper. That's strongest peace force. … We could use that on our southern border. That's the strongest peace force I've ever seen. There were more army tanks than I've ever seen. They're going to keep the peace all right. Here's a guy who's very savvy … I know him very well. Very, very well," Trump said in the podcast, according to a report by Rolling Stone.
"There was absolutely no reason why the crisis in Ukraine should have happened at all if it had been handled properly," Trump stated.
Trump again boasted about his friendship with Putin, saying, "I know Vladimir Putin very well, and he would never have done what he is doing now, no way."
In what looked to be the next phase of an invasion halted by heavy resistance, Russia launched a round of assaults on Ukraine, targeting airfields and fuel infrastructure. The United States and the European Union reacted with guns and ammunition for the outnumbered Ukrainians, as well as harsh penalties aimed at further isolating Moscow.
Massive explosions lit up the sky early Sunday south of Kyiv, where residents had hunkered down in houses, underground garages, and subway stations in preparation for a full-scale Russian attack.
