    Sheikh Hasina praises late Indira Gandhi for accommodating Bangladeshi refugees in India

    Dhaka: While addressing a public rally, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina praised the diplomatic relations India and Bangladesh has been enjoying and upholding for more the last 50 years. Recalling former PM Indira Gandhi, Sheikh Hasina lauded her for accommodating a large number of Bangladeshi refugees in India.





    In a public address, PM Hasina said, "Bangladesh and India are celebrating the golden jubilee of the establishment of diplomatic relations, this is a milestone in the journey of our bilateral ties. India recognised Bangladesh as an independent and sovereign state on December 6, 1971."

    "Today, I fondly recall the generosity of former Indian PM Indira Gandhi and her government. They provided accommodation to 10 million refugees from Bangladesh. During visit of PM Modi to Bangladesh in March, it was decided to recognize Dec 6 as Maitri Diwas," she added.





    In continuation of the celebration, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that President ram Nath Kovind will pay a state visit to Bangladesh from December 15 to December 17 to attend the 50th Victory Day celebrations of Bangladesh.
