Salman Rushdie, an Indian-born British citizen who has spent the
last 20 years living in the US, has endured threats since his 1988 book The
Satanic Verses was published. Some religious leaders viewed the book as
    offensive to the Prophet Mohammed.

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of Iran, put a bounty on
his head and called for his murder. In the UK, he spent over ten years hiding
and moving homes while under police protection. After the Iranian government
said in 1998 that it would not implement the "fatwa" or edict, Mr.
Rushdie started to come out of his life of hiding. Rushdie has resided in the
    US from the year 2000.
