Britain: Charles III to be formally proclaimed as king today

Queen Elizabeth, Britain's longest-serving queen, died on Thursday at the age of 96, with her son succeeding her as King...

Digital Desk: Two days after Queen Elizabeth II's death, her son Charles III will be formally proclaimed King on Saturday (September 10) at a meeting of the Accession Council, Buckingham Palace said.

Queen Elizabeth, Britain's longest-serving queen, died on Thursday at the age of 96, with her son succeeding her as King.

Buckingham Palace, the formal body overseeing the succession of Queen Elizabeth II, will meet from 10:00 am (0900 GMT), with a first public pronouncement from the balcony of St James's Palace in London at 11:00 am.

On Friday, Charles expressed his "deep grief" over his mother's death and vowed to continue the queen's "lifelong service."

"Queen Elizabeth was a life well lived, a promise with destiny kept, and she is mourned most deeply in her passing. That promise of lifelong service I renew to you all today," said her son and successor in his maiden televised address as King.

He expressed his gratitude to his "darling mama" for her "love, affection, guidance, and example" she showed. "I pay tribute to my mother's memory, and I honour her life of service. I know that her death brings sadness to so many, and I share that sense of loss beyond measure with you all," the 73-year-old, who ascended the throne following his mother's 70-year reign, said.

On Thursday, Charles said the Queen was a "cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother" who would be missed around the world.

"The death of my beloved mother, her majesty the queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms, and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world," he said in a statement.

"During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the queen was so widely held," he added.

Following the monarch's death, Charles immediately ascends to the throne. To proclaim the successor, an Accession Council is called as soon as practicable, generally within 24 hours, and assembled in St. James's Palace, the official residence of the sovereign, to proclaim the successor.
