Digital Desk: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday praised India's independent foreign policy and called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a great patriot. He added that India and Russia enjoy special relations and that there are no outstanding issues between the two countries.
"PM Modi is a great patriot who is able to pursue an independent foreign policy despite any attempts to do some truce or limit something," Putin said at the Valdai Club conference in Moscow.
"I am confident that India has a bright future and will play an increasingly important role in global affairs," he added.
Vladimir Putin also commended India's evolution from a British colony to a modern state. "From being a British colony to becoming an independent nation, India has come a long way. We are connected individually. We have never had any challenging circumstances and have always been there for one another. I'm sure that will happen in the future," he said.
Earlier, in his opening remarks, Vladimir Putin criticized the United States and its allies for playing a "dirty, dangerous, and bloody" game in order to dominate the world.
Putin's appreciation for India's foreign policy comes just weeks after India voted against a United Nations resolution criticizing Russia's takeover of four Ukrainian regions: Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia.
India has stated that there are other serious concerns at hand that has not been adequately addressed in the resolution. However, India has voiced grave worry about the intensification of the crisis in Ukraine, which has included the targeting of civilian infrastructure and the killing of civilians.
"My Prime Minister has stated categorically that this cannot be a time of war. India has made the decision to abstain with the steadfast determination to pursue a peaceful resolution via conversation and diplomacy," Ruchira Kamboj, Permanent Representative to the UN had said.
