The Indian move comes in the wake of a significant increase in Russian drone and missile strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and residential buildings in Kyiv and other cities.
Digital Desk: Following the deterioration in the security situation and an escalation in hostilities, India advised its nationals in Ukraine to leave the country "as soon as possible."
The Indian embassy in Kyiv issued an advisory advising Indians not to travel to Ukraine. The advisory came on the heels of another issued on October 10th, which only advised Indians to avoid all non-essential travel to and within Ukraine.
The Indian move comes in the wake of a significant increase in Russian drone and missile strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and residential buildings in Kyiv and other cities.
On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared martial law in four Ukrainian regions annexed by Russia, and there were reports of people fleeing the occupied city of Kherson following warnings of an impending attack.
"Due to the deteriorating security situation and recent escalation of hostilities across Ukraine, Indian nationals are advised against travelling to Ukraine," the Indian embassy said in a social media advisory.
"Indian citizens, including students, who are currently in Ukraine are advised to leave Ukraine as soon as possible by any available means," the advisory stated.
There was no official word on the number of Indians currently in Ukraine, but people familiar with the situation said a small number of students had returned in recent months to resume their studies.
According to the sources, the number of Indians who have returned to Ukraine is in the hundreds. They claimed that the majority of those who had returned had not registered with the Indian mission.
