Digital Desk: Amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has given a significant statement urging Israel to uphold international humanitarian law in its ongoing response. Speaking at an event in Malaysia, Jaishankar voiced concerns over civilian casualties and emphasized the fundamental rights of Palestinians, who, he stated, have been deprived of their homeland.

He acknowledged the October 7 attack by Hamas as an act of terrorism while stressing the importance of responses aligned with global humanitarian principles.

Jaishankar's remarks come against the backdrop of escalating tensions following Hamas' deadly assault on October 7, 2023, which claimed numerous civilian lives and led to the abduction of over 200 Israelis. In response, Israel launched a military offensive targeting Hamas strongholds in Gaza, with the stated objective of rescuing hostages and dismantling the terrorist network.

Despite a temporary ceasefire in November, efforts to negotiate the release of the remaining hostages and bring an end to the conflict have so far proven futile.

The ongoing conflict has taken a heavy toll, with Gaza authorities reporting over 32,000 fatalities. India has reiterated its support for a 'two-state solution' to address the longstanding Israel-Palestine conflict. Meanwhile, Jaishankar engaged in discussions with Malaysian business leaders, acknowledging their interest in maintaining partnerships with Indian industries.
