Pride Month 2022: Know about the significance & history of this month

Digital Desk: Happy Pride Month 2022! LGBT Pride Month 2022 began on June 1 (Wednesday) and continues till June 30. Like every year this year, too, the month started with pomp and dignity across the world. 

Every year during June, the Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, Bisexual,  Queer, and Intersex community, LGBTQI community celebrates the month in various ways.

Every year from June 1 to 30, Pride Month is celebrated by all the members of the LGBTQ community and their allies. The communities celebrate their identities through this special month.

They recognize their achievements as well as their hardships in maintaining their equality with the rest of the world. They mark the month by holding various events around the world to promote their notion of equal identity and raise worldwide awareness.

Pride Month can also be viewed as an occasion to peacefully demonstrate against the mistreatment that the LGBTQ community faces and promote political awareness of current problems that affect the community.

Pride Month marks the police raid that prompted the infamous Stonewall riots, which led to the establishment of LGBTQ+ rights. 

On June 28, 1969, a raid was carried out at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich, Manhattan. So, if you're thinking why the month of June was chosen? Because it was in 1969 that the Stonewall Riots took place.

The purpose of Pride Month for the LGBTQ+ community is to make people aware of their rights and choices, as well as to raise political awareness about their issues.

Pride Month is significant because it heralds the start of significant change within the LGBT+ community and societal ramifications. The world continues to persecute LGBTQ+ people, but this is only the beginning of their long wait for recognition.

Stonewall Inn was a popular place for young gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. There was a raid there, and the employees were arrested for selling alcohol and other liquors without a licence. In response, the LGBTQ+ community staged several rallies and demonstrations, calling for the creation of safe spaces for gays to meet and gather without fear of being detained or becoming victims of violence.

The LGBT community came to the spotlight due to these riots, which made them well-known around the world.

Parades, marches, and celebrations are all part of Pride Month. This month's parades include the New York Pride Parade, which is one of the largest and most well-known. Every year, almost 5 lakh people attend the procession. 

Brenda Howard, "Mother of Pride," was the inaugural LGBT Pride march organizer. In addition, the idea of a week of events around Pride Day was born. These events eventually evolved into the annual LGBT celebrations held in June.
