Long-term exposure to air pollution is well-known to cause problems such as red eyes, irritation or itching, and dry eyes...
Digital Desk: Poor air quality has become a major concern, and hazardous air pollution levels in Delhi and adjacent areas are once again on the rise. Because the eyes are one of the most sensitive and vital organs in the body, they are prone to illness.
"Because infants and the elderly are far more sensitive and delicate than middle-aged persons, indoor and outdoor air pollution has the greatest impact on them" Long-term exposure to air pollutants is known to cause problems such as red eyes, irritation or itching, dry eyes, and in some cases eye swelling," explains Prof. Dr Mahipal Singh Sachdev, Chairman and Managing Director of the Centre for Sight.
Because of poor air quality containing harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and coarse dust particles, there is a surge in the number of cases with red, watery eyes and various eye allergies during the months of November and December. These particles and fumes are hazardous to the human eye.
Patients are currently experiencing the following air pollution-related issues:
- Itchy and watery eyes
- Inflammation of the eyes
- Swelling of the eyes
- Dilated pupils eyes
- Tingling of the eyes
Here are some precautionary suggestions offered by Dr. Sachdev :
Even if particles enter the eyes, children and adults should avoid rubbing them and should thoroughly wipe their eyes with water.
Try to avoid traveling outdoors, especially early in the morning and late in the evening when there is a lot of smog outside; if going out, elders should use sunglasses for protection. The glasses work similarly to how the face masks work for our lungs.
Lubricate your eyes with eye drops suggested by your doctor 2-3 times each day to relax the eye muscles.
Infants and the elderly should drink enough of fluids since water is good for the body and the eyes. It not only keeps you hydrated, but it also empties your body of hazardous poisons and waste.
