    Digital Desk: World Diabetes Day is observed on November 14 every year to spread awareness of the disease that impacts millions of people worldwide. It is a day of global commemoration intended to draw attention to and encourage all initiatives taken to keep the disease under control.

    An excessively elevated blood sugar level is the cause of diabetes. It typically appears when the body isn't reacting to the effects of insulin correctly, or when the pancreas produces too little or no insulin at all. 

    People of all ages can be impacted by diabetes. The majority of diabetes types are chronic and long-lasting, though they can usually be controlled with medicine and lifestyle modifications.

    Types of Diabetes

    There are many types of diabetes. However,  Type 2 diabetes, Pre-diabetes, Type 1 diabetes, and Gestational diabetes, these four types are the most common ones found in most people.

    Causes and Symptoms of Diabetes

    The accumulation of excess glucose in the body is the primary cause that causes the development of diabetes. However, each person may have a distinct cause for an increase in glucose above what the body requires.

    The following factors may be the cause of the blood sugar spike: 
    Insulin resistance
    Autoimmune disease
    Hormonal imbalances
    Pancreatic damage
    Genetic mutations

    Meanwhile, increased thirst and dry mouth, frequent urination, exhaustion, blurred vision, rapid weight loss, tingling or numbness in the hands and feet, and sluggish wounds, sore, and cut healing are some of the signs of this health condition.

    Precautions of Diabetes

    The autoimmune and genetic types of diabetes are unavoidable. To reduce the chance of getting Type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes, several actions can be carried out. 

    Here are some preventative steps to help you stay away from the disease: Taking a healthy diet, Getting physically active, Manage your stress, Limit alcohol intake, Get adequate sleep, Quit smoking, Take medications as directed by a physician to manage existing risk factors for heart disease.

    History and Significance

    In 1991, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) jointly established World Diabetes Day. Following its founding, a resolution passed by the UN in 2006 led to its designation as a global day.

    World Diabetes Day is observed on November 14, the birthdate of Sir Frederick Banting, who collaborated with Charles Best to discover insulin in 1922.

    On this day, the need to contact as many people as possible worldwide to support a platform for the cure and treatment of diabetes is highlighted. The UN launched a blue circle emblem in 2007 as a worldwide icon to raise awareness of the illness and the community that it affects.
