Earth Day 2022 Celebration: Read here about its significance and this year's Google doodle theme

On the occasion of #EarthDay2022 celebrations, Google Doodle shows the effect of climate change to remind the damage done to the Earth now.

Digital Desk: Everyone loves mother earth, but how many of us can really well protect her? Mother earth has seen many tremendous degradation phases in the past years, which is now a very important cause of concern.

First Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, observed every April 22 each year; Earth Day marks its 52nd Anniversary this year and serves as a reminder to protect the environment, restore damaged ecosystems, and live a more sustainable lifestyle.

The Google Doodle illustrates icecaps receding in Africa and Greenland, burnt down forests in Germany, and coral bleaching on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Are you aware of Earth Day and why it is celebrated worldwide?

Since 1970, Earth Day has been observed. It was first observed in the United States in 1969 when approximately 20 million people took to the streets to protest the Santa Barbara oil slick, which was a great environmental catastrophe. Since then, the event has played a significant role in raising awareness of other environmental issues.

Undoubtedly, the historic Paris Agreement, signed by nearly 200 countries to establish a common target for reducing global greenhouse emissions, was signed on Earth Day in 2016.

The United Nations declared April 22 as "International Mother Earth Day" in 2009.

According to the United Nations, International Mother Earth Day reminds people that the Earth and its ecosystems provide them with life and sustenance. "The more healthy our ecosystems are, the more healthy the planet – and its people." Restoring our damaged ecosystems will aid in abolishing poverty, combating climate change, and averting mass extinction. "However, we will only succeed if everyone contributes."

Over the last decade, we've seen a spike in climate events that have impacted millions of people, ranging from extreme heat to wildfires and floods. According to the UN, the Covid-19 pandemic is also linked to the health of our ecosystem.

"Climate change, man-made changes to nature, and crimes that disrupt biodiversities, such as deforestation, land-use change, intensified agriculture and livestock production, or the growing illegal wildlife trade," the UN says.

Earth Day pledge this year- 

This year's motif for EarthDay.org is 'Invest in Our Planet.' "This is the moment to change it all — the business climate, the political climate, and how we take climate action," it says. Now is the time for unstoppable courage to preserve and protect our health, families, and livelihoods... we must all 'Invest In Our Planet' together." It also warns that time is running out, and we have to protect our Mother Earth.
