Do women really need to be empowered in today’s day and age? Yes, because it’s a question of equity.
Digital Desk: With the run-up to International Women’s Day afoot, questions and concerns are being considered about the distance we have come, and the milestones to be covered, regarding women empowerment.
Do women really need to be empowered in today’s day and age? Yes, because it’s a question of equity.
Ages of deprivation and discrimination have left scars that will take a few more ages of restoration.
Why were women relegated to the background universally since times immemorial The answer is quite simple, if we take a minute to think.
In the pre-machine eons of mankind’s existence, physical strength was key to dominance. So, the strongest of the males had it best, forget the females.
The big, strong men reserved the best of the rights and privileges for themselves, keeping women basically as part of their property, entrusted with bearing children and household chores in exchange for protection and sustenance.
So, now when machines have taken over almost all the “hard work” conceivable in the modern times, it is time to restore the position and dignity of women.
Equity says that measures need to be taken to make up for all the injustices of the past, and to bring up women to a level playing ground as men.
So, we have today, occasions like International Women’s Day, to explore the cause of women empowerment, to review and analyse the gains and losses along the way, as well as to chart the path forward.
So let us start with this perspective of equity.
What women need is not only equality, but equity. Thus, do not question the special sops for women if you encounter them, do not grudge that women are being lent a helping hand by enlightened circles.
After all, special circumstances call for special measures.
Take time to tell the women in your life, including yourself, if you are one, that you are special, you are loved, you are supported.
Rise, and Shine!
