Digital Desk: Two people died and four others were hospitalised after they consumed liquor in Dehgam in Gujarat's Gandhinagar district on Monday, police said.

Since the state was established in 1960, it has been dry.
The police sent the victims' bodies for a post-mortem, according to the primary information they obtained.

The forensic examination showed that methyl alcohol was absent from the drink the victims drank, suggesting that it was not deadly alcohol, according to Gandhinagar Superintendent of Police (SP) Ravi Teja Vasamsetty.

The victims purchased alcohol from a local Lihoda village liquor smuggler, according to the police. The village sarpanch claims that there have been previous incidences of alcohol-related deaths in the community.

Though specialists warned drinking alcohol on an empty stomach can be harmful, an investigation was ongoing to determine how the individuals passed away.

Congressman Amit Chavda attacked the BJP-led gopvernment, claiming that these kinds of crimes were occurring because the police and government were not keeping an eye on the purported alcohol mafia.

Despite Gujarat being a dry state, he said that people were dying because alcohol was easily available everywhere.

"The police and government's incompetence is what led to this incident. Liquor and drugs are available in Gujarat in such a way that we are moving in the direction of Udta Gujarat like Udta Punjab," Chavda said while referring to the Bollywood film.

On publishing this story, the state government has not yet released an official statement on the subject.
