Digital Desk: At least four people were killed and several others were injured as a sudden thunderstorm and the ensuing hailstorm wreaked havoc in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri on Sunday.
The majority of the district and many portions of neighboring Mainaguri were devastated by powerful storms that uprooted trees, knocked down electric poles, and damaged several residences, according to the officials.
The worst-hit places included Rajarhat, Barnish, Bakali, Jorpakdi, Madhabdanga, and Saptibari.
According to a disaster management officer, rescue operations were in progress in the impacted regions.
The MLA for Dhupguri, multiple patients were admitted to the hospital with injuries, according to Nirmal Chandra Roy.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that personnel from the police, civil administration, and disaster management departments had been sent to assist with the relief efforts. The Chief Minister further said that as the affected individuals were being relocated to safer areas, Quick Response Teams (QRTs) were called into action.
Mamata Banerjee also condoled the loss of lives. "Sad to know that sudden heavy rainfall and stormy winds brought disasters today afternoon in some Jalpaiguri-Maynaguri areas, with loss of human lives, injuries, house damages, uprooting of trees and electricity poles etc," Mamata Banerjee wrote on X.
The victims received assurances from the Chief Minister that the district administration would provide the required assistance.
"District administration will provide compensation to next of kin in the case of the deaths, and the injured as per rules and following the Model Code of Conduct," Mamata Banerjee stated.
To deal with the storm in Jalpaiguri, the governor has established an emergency cell at the Raj Bhavan.
The Governor's ADC, Major Nikhil Kumar, will serve as the Cell's nodal officer.
