Digital Desk: After meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah this afternoon, chief minister Neiphiu Rio announced the formation of a committee to examine into the withdrawal of the contentious Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in Nagaland.
The decision and demand to remove this act come after 14 people were killed earlier this month in a botched army operation in Mon district. In against the act, protest marches were staged throughout the state, especially in Kohima, the capital state.
Announcing it, chief minister Neiphiu Rio tweeted, "Briefed the media with regard to the meeting chaired by Hon'ble@HMOIndiaShri@AmitShahon Dec' 23, 2021 in New Delhi. Grateful to Amit Shah ji for taking up the matter with utmost seriousness. The State Govt. appeals to all sections to continue to maintain a peaceful atmosphere."

As per reports, in the meeting, it was decided that a committee would be formed that will include officials of centre and state and the state police. The committee will be submitting its findings within 45 days and based on its recommendation, the repeal of AFSPA from Nagaland will be decided.
The meeting was attended by the chief minister of Nagaland, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other senior officials.
The meeting also decided that immediate action would be taken against the military personnel involved in the Oting incident through a Court of Inquiry.
Last week, the Nagaland Assembly collectively demanded the withdrawal of AFSPA from the northeast, especially from Nagaland.
Significantly, Nagaland is not the single state demanding the AFSPA to get repealed. Following the Oting incident, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, whose National People's Party is a part of the National Democratic Alliance, advocated for the removal of AFSPA, claiming that it is ineffective and has produced "turmoil" in the state.
