Haryana: 6 dead after consuming suspected spurious liquor in 2 days

Digital Desk: A statement released by police on Wednesday states that six persons have died in the Yamunanagar district of Haryana over the past two days in what is believed to be a poisoning case brought on by tainted alcohol.

The precise cause of the fatalities has not yet been determined, they added, adding that investigations are still ongoing and that some persons have been detained for questioning.

"We learned about one person's death on Wednesday afternoon from a hospital." Late in the evening, Yamunanagar police official Ganga Ram Punia spoke with PTI over the phone and said that "the case was one of "suspected spurious liquor death."

He stated that the specific cause of death would be confirmed during a post-mortem examination, but police initiated an investigation based on the information and inquired about the situation in adjacent villages.

During the investigation, authorities learned from two villages in the district that three other victims were cremated on Tuesday and two more on Wednesday.

The police are also considering these five cases, as well as the one reported by the hospital, as possible bogus liquor poisoning events because the victims died under unusual circumstances, according to the SP.

He stated that because family members of the other five victims incinerated the remains without alerting the police, no post-mortem exams could be performed.

"We have rounded up some suspects for questioning," he went on to say.

According to police, the deceased were of various ages and are thought to have consumed the alleged counterfeit liquor on Tuesday night.

Five of them were supposed to have died after some time, but one died at the hospital on Wednesday, they added, adding that two more were said to be receiving treatment at different medical facilities.

According to another district police source, a FIR has been filed in the case.
