Digital Desk: Karnataka MP and Janata Dal (Secular) leader Prajwal Revanna, who recently left the country amid sexual harassment allegations, has announced that he will appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on May 31. In a video message, Revanna asserted his innocence and expressed his trust in the judiciary.
"Don’t mistake me, on the 31st at 10 am, I will be in front of the SIT and I will cooperate. I trust the judiciary and these are false cases against me. I trust the law," said the 33-year-old Hassan MP, facing charges of sexually abusing women.
Revanna left India on April 26 after videos allegedly showing him sexually abusing multiple women surfaced. He has labeled the allegations as a "political conspiracy" and cited depression and isolation as reasons for his departure. He also apologized to his family and party members for not disclosing his whereabouts.
"I want to apologize to my family members, my Kumaranna [uncle HD Kumaraswamy], and the party workers for not providing proper information about my whereabouts abroad. On April 26, when the elections were over, there was no case against me. The SIT wasn't formed. Two or three days after I left, I saw these allegations against me on YouTube. I also wrote to the SIT via my lawyer asking for seven days," Revanna explained.
Revanna also pointed to public comments from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition figures, framing the accusations as part of a broader political scheme. The JD(S), Revanna’s party, is a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Karnataka.
A Special Court for Elected Representatives issued an arrest warrant for Revanna on May 18, following an SIT application. Interpol has issued a 'Blue Corner Notice' seeking information on his whereabouts, based on a request from the SIT via the CBI. Revanna was last located in Germany. His statement comes shortly after his grandfather, JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda, demanded his return and surrender to authorities.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting the cancellation of Revanna's diplomatic passport.
Revanna’s father, JD(S) MLA HD Revanna, is also embroiled in legal troubles, facing two cases alongside his son. One case involves the molestation of a cook, allegedly raped by Prajwal, and the other concerns the kidnapping of a woman. HD Revanna is currently out on bail.
Reacting to Prajwal’s announcement, JD(S) president HD Kumaraswamy expressed some relief. "Deve Gowda had given him a warning and I, too, had appealed to him to come back and face the law. I'm convinced that he has considered our request and has respect for our party workers," Kumaraswamy said. Addressing Prajwal's claims of a conspiracy, he added, "All this will come out in the SIT investigation."
Regarding Prajwal's apology, Kumaraswamy commented, "I'm happy that he has some affection for our party workers."
As Prajwal Revanna prepares to face the SIT, his case underscores the intense political and legal battles unfolding in Karnataka, with significant implications for both his party and his political career.
