'Lord Ram was 'non-vegetarian': NCP leader Jitendra Awhad's remark sparks row

Digital Desk: NCP leader Jitendra Awhad stirred controversy on Wednesday, asserting that Lord Ram was a 'non-vegetarian',  during a rally. A video of his speech went viral, prompting strong reactions on social media.

Awhad claimed Lord Ram belonged to the Bahujan community and asserted, "Ram used to hunt and eat. He was not a vegetarian but a non-vegetarian." He questioned what a Kshatriya like Lord Ram would eat, suggesting that Kshatriyas traditionally consumed non-vegetarian food.

The NCP leader alleged an attempt to impose vegetarianism in India, asserting that 80% of the population remains non-vegetarian and considers Lord Ram their ideal. He emphasized that portraying Lord Ram as a vegetarian was inaccurate.

Backing his statement, Awhad argued, "A person living in a jungle for 14 years, where will he go looking for vegetarian food?"

His remarks faced backlash from the BJP, with MLA Ram Kadam criticizing Awhad for making objectionable comments about Lord Ram. Kadam expressed disappointment, stating, "Today's reality is that they (Uddhav Sena) do not care if somebody makes fun of the Hindus."

In response to the controversy, the BJP filed a complaint against Awhad. The party condemned his comments as politically motivated and unfortunate, highlighting the insensitivity towards Hindu sentiments.

Awhad further claimed that the real reason behind Mahatma Gandhi's assassination was casteism, asserting that his OBC background made some unable to accept his leadership.

The controversy underscores the intersection of politics, religion, and dietary preferences. Awhad's remarks have not only ignited a political feud but have also sparked discussions on historical and cultural interpretations of figures like Lord Ram. As the BJP lodges a formal complaint, the incident adds another layer to the complex tapestry of Indian political discourse.
