Digital Desk: A devastating dust storm in Mumbai led to a tragic incident as a massive hoarding collapsed at a petrol pump, claiming multiple lives instantly. The latest reports from the BMC and the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) confirm that at least 14 people lost their lives in the aftermath of the collapse.

Conflicting figures regarding the casualty count have emerged, with the NDRF reporting 14 fatalities while the BMC states the toll at 12. However, both agencies concur that a total of 88 individuals were affected by the collapse, with 74 sustaining injuries but being successfully rescued.

The incident occurred in Ghatkopar, where a towering 70-metre billboard crashed down amidst heavy rains and thunderstorms on Monday.

Positioned illegally at Ghatkopar's Cheddanagar Junction, the hoarding's collapse proved fatal as it struck the adjoining petrol pump.

In response to the catastrophe, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde personally supervised the rescue efforts and announced compensation of Rs 5 lakhs for the families of the deceased, along with medical treatment for the injured.

Subsequently, Mumbai Police initiated legal action by filing an FIR against the owner of Ego Media, Bhavesh Bhinde, and other responsible parties. Charges under sections 304, 338, and 337 of the Indian Penal Code, relating to culpable homicide, distressing injury, and negligence, have been pressed against them.

Authorities revealed that the hoarding was erected without prior authorization, rendering it illegal. The investigation into the collapse is ongoing, with the Pantnager police station overseeing the probe.

Meanwhile, the dust storm wreaked havoc across Mumbai, bringing the city to a standstill. The turbulent winds disrupted flight and train services while causing extensive damage to infrastructure and uprooting trees and poles.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of continued thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in Maharashtra for the following day, urging residents to remain vigilant.
