This session marks the first since the Lok Sabha elections and will feature newly elected MPs taking their oaths.
Digital Desk: The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha is scheduled to commence on Monday, June 24, with a rejuvenated Opposition preparing to challenge the NDA government on multiple fronts. This session marks the first since the Lok Sabha elections and will feature newly elected MPs taking their oaths. On June 26, the election of the Lok Sabha Speaker will follow, with President Droupadi Murmu delivering her address to a joint sitting of both Houses on June 27.
Buoyed by increased numbers, the Opposition is anticipated to adopt a confrontational stance, focusing on issues such as alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG and NET exams, the relocation of statues within the Parliament building complex, and the appointment of seven-term BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab as the pro tem Speaker.
Here are the latest developments:
· The session will commence with President Murmu administering the oath to BJP's Bhartruhari Mahtab as the pro tem Speaker. Subsequently, Mahtab will invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take his oath as a member of the House, followed by the swearing-in of other newly elected MPs.
· The Opposition has criticized Mahtab's appointment, claiming that the government overlooked Congress's Kodikunnil Suresh, an eight-term Lok Sabha MP.
· Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju defended Mahtab's selection, citing his seven uninterrupted terms as a Lok Sabha member, qualifying him for the position. However, the Opposition has accused the government of disregarding Suresh's seniority and flouting established norms.
· Ahead of today's session, Rijiju extended a welcome to the newly elected lawmakers, stating, “The First Session of the 18th Lok Sabha commences today, June 24, 2024. I extend a warm welcome to all the newly elected honorable members. As Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, I am always available to assist the members. I look forward positively to coordinating to ensure the smooth functioning of the house.”
· Congress leader Jairam Ramesh responded, “Actions will speak louder than words Mr. Minister. Walk the talk.”
· The Opposition, particularly MPs from the INDIA bloc, has planned a symbolic protest near Gate No. 2 of the old Parliament building, the former site of Mahatma Gandhi's statue. This statue, along with others, was relocated to a new area named Prerna Sthal. A senior opposition leader informed news agency PTI that some MPs will carry copies of the Constitution of India during their walk to the Parliament building.
