Digital Desk: Throughout the country, the National Science Day 2022 would be organised with great pomp and show in almost all educational institutions. Every year on February 28th, National Science Day is observed to commemorate and recognise the contributions of scientists to the country's progress. On this day in 1928, Indian physicist Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman made a significant discovery in the science of spectroscopy, which he subsequently termed the Raman Effect.
CV Raman received the coveted Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for his contribution.
The theme of National Science Day 2022, 'Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future'.
National Science Day: History
CV Raman developed the Raman Effect or Raman Scattering in 1928, which specifies the inelastic scattering of photons by matter, implying an exchange of energy and a change in light direction. The physicist was awarded the Noble Prize in 1930 for his discoveries. To commemorate the win, the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) petitioned the Central Government in 1986 to designate February 28 as National Science Day (NSD). Since then, February 28 has been designated as National Science Day.
National Science Day: Significance
National Science Day is observed to increase awareness about the value of science. Educational institutions observe national Science Day through public speeches, radio, television, science movies, science exhibitions on themes and concepts, debates, quiz contests, lectures, and science model displays.
