Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) seeks review of Agnipath Scheme, backs UCC

He clarified that the JD(U) does not oppose the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) but insists on thorough consultation with all stakeholders.

Digital Desk: Alliance leader KC Tyagi of the Janata Dal (United) stated on Thursday that his party has requested a review of the Agnipath scheme and intends to actively address the caste census issue, which he emphasized as a current necessity. Tyagi affirmed that his party's support to the BJP is without conditions.

"There is considerable discontent among voters regarding the Agniveer scheme for short-term army recruitment. Our party advocates for the rectification of these deficiencies, which have elicited objections from the public," Tyagi informed reporters.

He clarified that the JD(U) does not oppose the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) but insists on thorough consultation with all stakeholders. "Regarding the UCC, the chief minister (Nitish Kumar) has corresponded with the Law Commission. We do not oppose the UCC, but it is imperative to engage in consultations with all stakeholders, including chief ministers, political parties, and various communities, to reach a consensus," he remarked.

Responding to inquiries about the party's stance on a caste census, Tyagi stated, "No political party in the nation has rejected the idea of a caste census. Bihar has set a precedent, and even the Prime Minister did not oppose it... It is the need of the hour, and we will actively pursue it."

Regarding their support to the BJP as part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Tyagi reiterated, "Our support is unconditional, with no preconditions. However, it is deeply ingrained in our thoughts and sentiments that Bihar should be granted special status. Considering the challenges Bihar has encountered post-bifurcation, rectifying them necessitates the conferment of special status."

Alliance support, such as that of the JD(U), holds significant importance for the BJP, which fell short of a majority on its own in the Lok Sabha elections. The BJP secured 240 seats, 32 shy of an absolute majority. Alongside its allies, including N Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Nitish Kumar's JD(U), which won 16 and 12 seats in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar, respectively, the NDA commands a total of 293 seats.
