Om Birla and K Suresh file nominations for historic LS speaker election

Digital Desk: The Lok Sabha is poised to witness a historic event as BJP MP Om Birla and Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh have filed nominations for the Speaker's election, marking the first contested election for this prestigious post in Indian parliamentary history. This development follows the breakdown of negotiations between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition's INDIA bloc.

Notably, the Opposition had agreed to support Om Birla, the government-backed candidate, on the condition that the Deputy Speaker would come from the INDIA bloc. However, discussions faltered when no consensus was reached on this crucial appointment.

Efforts by Union Minister and BJP leader Rajnath Singh to secure Opposition support proved unsuccessful. Moments before the nomination deadline, Congress leaders KC Venugopal and DMK's TR Baalu left Singh's office without endorsing the NDA's nominee. KC Venugopal cited the government's refusal to commit to appointing an Opposition member as Deputy Speaker as the reason for the Opposition's decision to field Kodikunnil Suresh.

Kodikunnil Suresh, a veteran Parliamentarian from Kerala and a prominent Dalit leader emerged as the Opposition's candidate. He recently secured his eighth consecutive Lok Sabha victory earlier this month.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi emphasized the Opposition's readiness to support Om Birla if the tradition of appointing the Deputy Speaker from the Opposition ranks was upheld. However, he criticized Prime Minister Modi's administration for allegedly rebuffing constructive cooperation.
