Rahul Gandhi wins in Rae Bareli by nearly 4 lakh votes, highest margin in UP

The Congress party also aims to reclaim its Amethi seat from the BJP, with Smriti Irani trailing behind Congress candidate Kishori Lal by over 90,000 votes.

Digital Desk: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is poised for a significant victory in Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli, boasting the largest winning margin in the state. As per Election Commission data at 3:15 pm, Mr. Gandhi leads his closest competitor, Dinesh Pratap Singh of the BJP, by over 3 lakh votes. In contrast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi maintains a lead of over 1.4 lakh votes against his closest rival, Ajay Rai of the Congress, in Varanasi.

Sonia Gandhi, who represented the Rae Bareli seat since 2004, secured victory by a margin of 1.67 lakh votes against Mr. Singh in 2019. Choosing not to contest in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, she transitioned to the Rajya Sabha, paving the way for Rahul Gandhi to take her place as the Congress candidate from Rae Bareli.

Rahul Gandhi previously served as the representative of the Amethi Lok Sabha seat from 2004 to 2019. Despite losing Amethi to the BJP's Smriti Irani in the last elections, he secured a second seat in Kerala, maintaining his position as a Member of Parliament. In the ongoing elections, he contests in two seats - Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh) and Wayanad (Kerala) - leading in both. In Wayanad, he holds a lead of over 3 lakh votes against his nearest rival, Annie Raja of the CPM.

The Congress party also aims to reclaim its Amethi seat from the BJP, with Smriti Irani trailing behind Congress candidate Kishori Lal by over 90,000 votes.

Latest trends suggest that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leads in 291 seats, while the opposition INDIA bloc trails with 233 seats. In Uttar Pradesh, there are surprising developments as the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance leads over the BJP.
