New Delhi: Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait who strongly protested against the three farm laws, has been honored with the 21st Century Icon Award in London on Friday.
However, Tikait was not present during the award ceremony but posted a tweet in which he dedicated the award to the farmers who died during the protest.
He was nominated as a finalist by the London-based Squared Watermelon company following the announcement made by Prime minister Narendra Modi to repeal the three farm laws.
Tikait has been selected for this award for his mass involvement in running a long movement and keeping the movement alive.

In a tweet, the London-based company said, “National farmer leader Chaudhary Rakesh Tikait, the leader of the biggest agricultural movement of this century, not only the country but in the world. He took the unprecedented farmer’s movement to the heights of success, hence he has been awarded the 21st Century Icon Award in London. After the withdrawal of the Agricultural Laws, the London company nominated Rakesh Tikait ji for this award. The choice was made for conducting this unprecedented movement adhering to non-violence.”
Meanwhile, today, Bharatiya Kisan Union organized a ‘Thank you Kisan Mahapanchayat’, where Rakesh Tikait was honored by the union for his mass involvement in the farmer’s protest. He also addressed the Mahapanchayat.
Reportedly, Kisan Mahapanchayat was held on 25 acres of land near Kairana Panipat bypass. Many farmers from Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh participated on the occasion.
On Saturday, a convoy of tractor trolleys laden with flowers, playing ‘Vijay Geet,’ came out of the protest site to return to their home. Before leaving the Singhu border, some farmers performed ‘havan,’ while others performed Ardas and left their respective homes in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
BKU leader Rakesh Tikait stated that the farmers would completely vacate the agitation site by December 15. He also added that the first group of farmers had already left for Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.
Moreover, Tikait, while addressing the media, said that every year, a ten-day Kisan Andolan would be held to discuss the farmers’ issues.
Further lauding the role of media in highlighting farmers’ agitation, he said that constant reporting, by print, electronic and especially by social media, put pressure on the government.
Rakesh Tikait was born on June 4, 1969, in the Sisauli village of Muzaffarnagar district. He is the second son of Mahendra Singh Tikait. He has been recognized as a farmer’s leader who fights for the interest of farmers in front of the government along with dharna and demonstrations. He is currently heading the Bharatiya Kisan Union and is the organization’s national spokesperson.
