Digital Desk: Police said on Monday that an unsuccessful attempt by unidentified thieves to steal cash from an ATM in the Thane region of Maharashtra using a gas cutter resulted in a fire that destroyed Rs 21 lakh in stored cash. Early on January 13, an official stated, that the event occurred at an ATM of a national bank in the Dombivali township's Vishnu Nagar neighborhood.
“On January 13, between one and two in the morning, unknown individuals forced the shutter's lock to let them inside the ATM kiosk. They opened the ATM with a gas cutter. Nevertheless, a fire was started by the process's extreme heat," the official stated.
According to him, the fire badly damaged the ATM's internal parts, which led to the machine's destruction and the loss of the cash that was stored—which was estimated to be worth Rs 21,11,800.
"Police filed a formal complaint (FIR) based on the information provided by the Electronic Payment Systems official in charge of overseeing the ATM center," the official continued.
Under sections 457 (Lurking house-trespass or house-breaking by night), 380 (Theft in any building, tent, or vessel), and 427 (Committing mischief and therefore inflicting loss or damage to the value of fifty rupees or upward) of the Indian Penal Code, a case was filed against unidentified people.
