Digital Desk: Himachal Pradesh, a picturesque haven nestled in the Himalayas, witnessed a surge in tourist influx during the Christmas season, and now, it's gearing up for a vibrant New Year celebration. However, amidst the revelry, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has emphasized the importance of adhering to safety rules and regulations.

A stern warning has been issued for those found in an inebriated state, emphasizing the commitment to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Kullu Deputy Commissioner Ashutosh Garg reassures visitors, stating, "Every effort is being made to maintain law and order. I appeal to tourists to keep the safety aspect in mind wherever they go."

The stunning landscapes of Himachal Pradesh, particularly in destinations like Manali, have attracted a significant influx of tourists, with Manali Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) KD Sharma reporting nearly 10,000 tourist vehicles entering the valley daily. The situation is being carefully managed, with Manali divided into eight sectors to control traffic, prohibiting idle parking and overtaking.

Despite the biting cold, tourists are undeterred, drawn by the allure of snowfall. In Koksar, a popular destination, the minimum temperature dropped to minus 6°C, yet visitors continue to flock to witness the snow-clad beauty of Lahaul and Spiti valleys.

To accommodate the surge in visitors, the state government has made extensive preparations. Both Manali and Shimla are hosting a variety of events, including the Manali Queen beauty pageant, gala dinners, and musical nights, all designed to enthral and attract tourists. Himachal Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) General Manager, BS Aukta, notes that state-owned hotels are nearing full capacity after a notable improvement in occupancy since November 2023.

Aukta reveals, "The occupancy fell below 15 per cent during the monsoon season, but it improved during November 2023. After December 20, the occupancy was between 80 and 100 per cent." The HPTDC has curated a lineup of events, including live music shows, snacks, drinks, and a special night for couples on December 31, featuring lemon and balloon dances, culminating in the Manali Queen competition.

However, as the festivities reach their peak, concerns arise about traffic congestion, particularly after the severe traffic jam experienced in Manali during Christmas. The aftermath of floods and landslides in July 2023 still lingers, with some roads lacking proper tarring. The highway connecting Mandi and Manali is undergoing repairs, leading to traffic jams near Pondoh Dam.

While traffic congestion has eased since Christmas, there's an expectation that it may resurface during New Year celebrations as more tourists pour into the valley. The statistics from June 2023 indicate a substantial increase in tourist footfall, with 28.03 lakh visitors compared to 20.62 lakh the previous year. The hotel industry, having weathered challenges such as floods and bad weather in 2023, now pins its hopes on recovering losses during the current winter season.

Himachal Pradesh is aglow with the spirit of celebration, inviting tourists to revel in the beauty of snow-covered landscapes. However, amidst the festivities, the emphasis on safety and preparedness underscores the commitment to ensuring a memorable and secure experience for all visitors.
