Sushmita Dev, S. Selvaganapathy took oath as members of Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev took oath as a member of Rajya Sabha from West Bengal on Tuesday at New Delhi.

Along with Dev, S Selvaganapathy of Bharatiya Janata Party also took oath as a member of Rajya Sabha.

Both Dev and Selvaganapathy were elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from West Bengal and Puducherry, respectively, in September.

The oath was administered to Dev and Selvaganapathy by Vice President and Chairman of Rajya Sabha M Venkaiah Naidu. Dev took the oath in the Bengali language, while Selvaganapathy took the oath in the Tamil language.

After taking oath as an MP, Dev said, “It’s an honour to be a part of the TMC team in the Upper House. Together we will fight for the people and protect the interest of the nation under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee.”

“There are lots of responsibilities upon me as I will sit for the first time in Rajya Sabha as a Trinamool Congress member. I am from Assam, have been ordered to work in Tripura and was elected from West Bengal. There are issues of states, of people that need to be raised and will try my best. I hope the opposition will get a chance to raise issues concerning people in the Winter Session of Parliament.” said Dev while speaking to ANI.

Further, Dev demands the resignation of Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant following the governor from his party exposed the corruption in his government.

“The governor of Goa who was appointed by the National Democratic Allkiance (NDA) has raised allegations against a chief minister of the same alliance. The investigation must be carried out and proper action must be taken against Sawant if Prime Minister Narendra Modi truly has zero tolerance against corruption.” Dev said.

Earlier, the Election Commission had announced by-elections for six Rajya Sabha seats across five states. These seats fell vacant due to the resignation or death of the sitting MPs. It also announced a biennial election for one seat from Puducherry. The six Rajya Sabha seats included two in Tamil Nadu and one in West Bengal, Maharashtra, Assam, and Madhya Pradesh.
