Those who were involved in sacrilege should be given capital punishment: Navjot Singh Sidhu

Amritsar: A day after a man was lynched in the Golden Temple in Amritsar for alleged sacrilege on Saturday, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu said that anyone involved in any incident of sacrilege against any religion should be given capital punishment.

“Punjab is built on strong foundation of oneness and universal brotherhood laid down by Guru Sahib. No divisive forces can destroy strong social fabric of Punjabi community. Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feeling should be dealt with deterrent punishment.” said Navjot.

He made the statement while attending a rally at Malerkotla on Sunday.

Moreover, he said that in the future, if there is any such incident of sacrilege, be it against Quran Sharif, Bhagavad Gita or Guru Granth Sahib, all these involved should be awarded capital punishment, the severest punishment under the constitution.

Further, Navjot claims that the incident is a part of a conspiracy to eradicate a community and hollow its roots.

Meanwhile, terming the incident as unfortunate, Punjab Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said that a Special Investigation Team had been constituted under DCP Law and Order, which will submit the investigation report within two days.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal speaking on the matter, said, “If the culprits were punished thorough investigation, then no one will dare to do it again. This can be someone conspiracy also, so strict action should be taken against who sent him.”

Punjab Police is identifying the man at the Golden Temple who tried to commit sacrilege by entering the sanctum sanctorum, after which he was beaten to death.

Police said, “It has been learned that the accused was in the premises for a few hours before committing the incident.”  

Amritsar Police Commissioner Sukhchain Singh Gill said on Sunday that an FIR had been registered against the unidentified person on Saturday night under Section-295A (causing hatred of religious groups), Section-307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. 

He said that the photographs of all the cameras installed in the Golden Temple had been obtained and they are being probed to collect information about the accused.
