Assistant Commander Karamveer Singh of the NDRF stated that the primary cause of the collapse was the lack of plaster 200 metres from the tunnel's beginning.
Digital Desk: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reaches Uttarkashi to carry out an on-site assessment and evaluation of rescue operations following the landslide disaster, in which an under-construction tunnel collapsed on Sunday, trapping 40 persons.
"The PM has assured help in every way possible. The 40 trapped people are being rescued by the NDRF, SDRF, other organisations, and specialists. We want to reassure the families of those who are stranded that the state government and administration are making every effort to rescue them," speaking to the media, he stated.
Heavy excavator machines have been mobilized to remove the debris. Workers trapped in the tunnel have been contacted through walkie-talkies.
All of the workers are reportedly safe as of right now. Through the pipe that was installed to deliver water in the tunnel, oxygen is being supplied. Through this conduit, compressed packets of gramme have been sent at night to the workers stranded in the tunnel. The search and rescue effort is still ongoing after continuing through the whole night.
According to rescuers, the crews still need to remove around 35 metres of rubble in order to get to where the 40 stranded workers are. By nightfall, the rescuers hope to have completed this task and free the stranded labourers.
The debris is almost 60 metres deep, according to Uttarkashi Circle Officer Prashant Kumar. It is raining as we are removing the rubble. As things stand, we were able to get in contact with the individuals stranded within the tunnel yesterday. Within the tunnel, we have travelled around 15 metres, and there are still about 35 metres to go. We have given them water and oxygen, so everyone is safe. We are travelling sideways to enter the tunnel. There are perhaps forty individuals stranded inside when contact is established."
Assistant Commander Karamveer Singh of the NDRF stated that the primary cause of the collapse was the lack of plaster 200 metres from the tunnel's beginning.
"Ten to fifteen metres further have been excavated since yesterday. Water and food have been provided for the people who are confined inside. We will do all in our power by this evening to make sure that everyone leaves safely. Inside are forty people who are all safe. The plaster was applied for 200 metres from the tunnel's beginning, but it stopped there and has so abruptly sunk. Debris is dropping from above when the machines are operating, which is creating some issues "he said.
Once concluded, the tunnel will link Uttarkashi's Silkyara with Dandalgaon. The Char Dham Road Project, will shorten the distance of approximately 26 km that links Uttarkashi and Yamunotri Dham.
