Bengaluru: Called as the 'representatives of the masses' whose duty lies on upholding the ideals of the country's law, a shocking and an utterly outrageous statement made by an MLA in the Karnataka Assembly, have garnered condemnation from all corners.
Senior Congress leader K R Ramesh Kumar and Karnataka Assembly Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri sparked controversy after the former made a sexist remark on rape in the ongoing state Assembly session in Belagavi.
Following this, Kumar a former speaker of the House, said to the Speaker, “There’s a saying…when rape is inevitable lie down and enjoy it. That’s exactly the position into which you are.” Kageri laughed in response.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, leaving people fuming.
The Congress leader made the comment as MLAs demanded time from the Speaker to discuss farmers’ issues in the Assembly.
The contentious remark made netizens fuming with anger, shocked over how such an offensive comment was made in a state assembly by an elected member, and how instead of opposing the remark, the Karnataka Assembly Speaker and members of the Legislative Assembly were heard breaking out into laughter.
Several netizens fumed over the Karnataka Congress leader’s unpardonable comment and slammed him.
This is not the first time Kumar passed an offensive statement with regards to this sensitive issue. Earlier too, when he was the speaker of the Karnataka Assembly, Kumar had compared himself to a rape survivor. The Congress leader’s comment came after his name emerged in a controversial audio clip between BJP veteran BS Yediyurappa and other senior leaders that mentioned how he had allegedly taken a Rs 50 crore bribe from the party.
Making a disdainful remark against a rape survivor being raped again and again when cross-examined I the court of law, he had said, “I feel like a rape victim.” Later when women legislators protested against the insensitive statement, Kumar tendered an apology. The Karnataka Assembly Session is being conducted at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, Belagavi from December 13 to 24, 2021.
