Wife makes man wait 10 years for ‘shubh muhurat’, high court grants divorce

Digital Desk: Chattisgarh High Court granted divorce decree to a man whose wife did not join him in matrimony for almost 10 years because the auspicious “Shubh Muhurat” hadn’t come.

"The auspicious time is meant for happy family life. Instead, in this instant matter, it appears that auspicious time was used as a tool barrier by the wife to start their matrimonial home," the HC said.

Santosh Singh had petitioned the High Court to overturn a family court ruling that had denied his divorce case due to desertion. According to his petition, he married in 2010 and lived with his wife for only 11 days. Her relatives then pulled her away, claiming they needed her for work. When he inquired of his relatives, they informed him that the time was not favorable. Singh requested ex-parte recovery of conjugal rights, which was granted. When the auspicious knot began, the wife declared she was ready to join Singh, but he did not come to take her back, as was required by their ritual.

She also claimed that she had not abandoned him and that he had neglected to return her as was customary.

The wife was aware that the decision for restitution of conjugal rights had been issued, but she refused to join him in matrimony, according to Singh's lawyer.
