Digital Desk: A student from the ‘tech city’ of India, Bengaluru, was arrested by Mumbai Police on Monday for allegedly using his Twitter handle to circulate ‘demeaning’ photos of Muslim women.
A 21-year-old engineering student, Vishal Kumar was arrested by Mumbai Police on Tuesday for circulating ‘objectional’ photographs of Muslim women on the internet.
The IT student is produced before a magistrate court today, January 4, where police will seek custody of the detained student.
A woman from Uttarakhand has also been detained in connection with the case.
The IT cell of the Mumbai police had traced the IP address of the Twitter accounts that were used to upload morphed photos of Muslim women which consists of lawyers, authors, and many known woman personalities said the police.
The police department is also investigating the matter to find out if the student is the sole developer of the app or if he is a part of a larger racket.
Under various sections of the IPC and IT Act, the Bengaluru-based IT student was arrested following a complaint lodged by one of the victims on January 1.
The operator of the controversial app is found to be a foreign-based company, i.e. ‘GitHub’.
More than 100 photos of Muslim women that were circulated online were removed by the host company,’ GitHub’ on Saturday after an FIR was lodged against the company.
What is the ‘Bulli Bai ‘ app?
On the First day of the year 2022, many women prominent journalists, activists, and lawyers' photographs were morphed and uploaded on the ‘disgusting’ app.
Several other Muslim women found themselves on ‘auction’ on this controversial app.
According to reports, it is believed that the Bulli Bai app was created to defame many women speakers, social workers, and known personalities of the country.
