Mary Kom resigns as India's Chef-de-Mission for Paris Olympics

In a letter addressed to Usha, Kom expressed her regret at not being able to fulfill her commitment, citing personal circumstances

Digital Desk: Renowned six-time world champion boxer Mary Kom has opted to step down from her role as India's chef-de-mission for the upcoming Paris Olympics due to personal reasons, as announced by President PT Usha of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

In a letter addressed to Usha, Kom expressed her regret at not being able to fulfill her commitment, citing personal circumstances. Despite her willingness to serve her country in any capacity, she felt compelled to resign from the prestigious responsibility.

“I consider it an honour to serve my country in every way possible, and I was mentally prepared for it. However, I regret that I will not be able to uphold the prestigious responsibility and would like to resign, owing to personal reasons,” the 41-year-old stated in a letter to PT Usha.

Having been appointed on March 21, Kom was slated to oversee logistical aspects for India's contingent during the Games scheduled from July 26 to August 11.

Usha conveyed her understanding and respect for Kom's decision, assuring her of continued support from both herself and the IOA. Plans for appointing a replacement are underway, with consultations in progress.

Shiva Keshavan, a six-time Winter Olympian and luger has been named deputy chef-de-mission, and veteran table tennis player Sharath Kamal will carry India's flag in the male category. The female flag-bearer will be designated later, as several quotas for the Games are yet to be filled.

With over 40 Indian athletes qualifying across various disciplines, India aims to surpass its previous Olympic tally of seven medals, including a gold.
