Digital Desk: A WhatsApp message sent by 'Viksit Bharat Sampark,' allegedly representing the Prime Minister's office, requesting feedback, has ignited a political firestorm. Accusing the administration of exploiting official channels for party objectives.

The message from the Modi government seeks input for shaping the "Viksit Bharat" agenda, a key initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, opposition parties argue that the attached PDF is essentially political propaganda disguised as a request for feedback. 

The Kerala Congress took to ‘X’ to voice its objections, highlighting the WhatsApp policy that prohibits political parties and politicians from using the platform for campaigning. They accuse the government of misusing WhatsApp for political ends, questioning whether there is a separate policy in place for the BJP. “The message talks about taking feedback from Citizens, but the attached PDF is nothing but political propaganda,” Kerala Congress posted.

Prime Minister Modi's letter, issued on the eve of the general election announcement, seeks suggestions from the public to fulfil the vision of a developed India. However, opposition leaders, including Trinamool Congress' Mahua Moitra, criticise the timing of the message, suggesting it was sent after the model code of conduct came into force.

The controversy underscores India's increasingly blurred lines between governance and political campaigning. The BJP's efforts to engage with the public through initiatives like 'Viksit Bharat Modi ki guarantee' have drawn both praise and criticism, with opposition parties raising concerns about the fair use of government resources and platforms for political purposes. As the country gears up for elections, such controversies will continue dominating the political discourse.

“Political Parties or Political Candidates that use automation or send WhatsApp messages to users without permission can have their accounts banned. Currently, political candidates and political campaigns are not permitted to use the WhatsApp Business Platform. In many countries, WhatsApp engages with political entities ahead of major elections to emphasize our approach to safety. We also emphasize the importance of using WhatsApp responsibly.”
